A couple of weeks ago, we were in the mood for margaritas and decided to take a walk to Park Slope and stopped at Calexico, on Fifth Avenue.
The place has a cute little entrance for take out/pick up orders with a door to the left to the dining area. The dining area is ample, with 4 booths by big windows facing Fifth Avenue. The bar is to the right and a number of tables fill the space.
We were quickly seated on a booth and the girls got a lotería inspired coloring kids menu along with some crayons. The kids menu is sweet and simple, with only three items to order (chicken fingers, mac and cheese or cheese quesadilla), served with steamed broccoli or French fries.
For the adults, the drink menu includes a selection of margaritas, some fancy cocktails (mostly tequila based, but some others with vodka or rum), beers on tap, can and bottle, and some wine.
We ordered the chicken fingers with fries for the girls, the chipotle pork burrito and the fried chicken taco, along with the happy hour margaritas, which came immediately and were delicious. It is obvious that they are used to little ones, as they quickly brought the girls’ order along with our drinks, so no one had to wait. Our server was very friendly and accommodating: when another friend and her little one joined us a bit later, there was no problem getting them up to speed.
The fried chicken taco was served as a one (potentially messy) portion. The chicken was perfectly fried and wonderfully paired with bacon and avocado, making me wonder if we should have ordered another taco (seriously debating between the Baja fish or the carne asada one).
The burrito was generously sized and tightly packed with slow-cooked chipotle pork, rice, black beans, pico de gallo, pickled red onions and sour cream and it was very tasty.

The bathrooms are all the way in the back, past the bar, to the right side and there are two of them. The one on the left is on the tiny side but the one in the right is ample and has a changing table. Both bathrooms are kind of dark, with cement floor and some fun wall art that tries to cheer the rooms up.
Overall, a great place that has it all: kid friendly, very nice staff (our server came to personally say goodbye to the girls when his shift was done), solid food and amazing drinks (and a happy hour, too!). What is there not to like?
